AT&T will autocomplete an activation

AT&T will auto-complete an activation. If you ever have to call AT&T to activate your phone, you have experienced the automatic voice interactive system. It normally asks you the phone number and then tells you to turn off and on your phone. It also surprised me by auto-completing an activation.

AT&T will autocomplete an activationI had called the number and put in the phone number to be activated but I had someone need my help so I hung up the phone. When I came back the number had been activated. It didn’t require me to complete the process, and I didn’t have to turn off and on the phone.

I know that most of you won’t have to do this process. This is really of interest to IT people or small business owners who do this manually. I found it interesting and wondering how far AT&T will go to get new business.

To me, if you want to activate something you should be there for the entire process. If something doesn’t go well, you don’t want the end-user to experience those problems. I have activated dozens of phones over the phone and been in the process with other IT people who activated phones. It is not a perfect process. There have been times where the number didn’t port over correctly, or other issues happened. You want the person who uses the phone to have a great experience and not have any problems so I always like to test things. You can’t test things when the process happens without following a procedure.

Of course you could argue that you know it was successful if it works. This might be ok for the rank and file people, but the higher ranking people expect to have no problems. If for example, texting goes to their old phone still, they will blame you for the process. There are times where phones can get linked even when the activation to the new number has occurred. People who use iMessage or FaceTime can still have their old phone linked to the phone number. One person I helped still got texts and calls on her old phone because Apple had linked them due to her iMessage and FaceTime use.
